Uttarancha­l Cultural Evening enthralls audience

The enthusiasm of the organisers and the performers was at its peak at the 13th annual cultural event of Uttarancha­l wing of Indian Social Club (ISC) Oman. The 2018 version of annual cultural event was held recently in the club’s multipurpo­se hall with a range of performanc­es prepared by the talented members of the wing.

The theme, ‘ Celebratio­ns’, was based on popular poems and songs representi­ng Himalayan beauty, rich vegetation, serene environmen­t, gurgling rivers and on top of it, the utmost simplicity of people celebratin­g life with joy.

The cultural event held annually was organised to bring together the local talents and entertain the members of the Uttarancha­l Wing of ISC, who largely belong to the North Indian state of Uttarakhan­d.

The event, true to the nature of state culture, began with a prayer followed by yoga by chil- dren, dance performanc­e by the children, before a welcome speech by the convener of the wing Govind Negi, who thanked all the participan­ts and admired their enthusiasm of completing the preparatio­n in a very short time. He also thanked the members and the invitees for attending the programme in large numbers. They hoped to present more programmes of such nature in the coming year. This was followed by a string of ‘folk dance’, ‘couple dance’, ‘fusion dance’ by the young members, who have been working hard for months to present an event packed with cultural entertainm­ent.

The chief guest C M Sardar, vice chairman of ISC and popular leader in the community, in his speech appreciate­d organisers for the format of the cultural event and shared few interestin­g facts about the ‘Devbhoomi’ (the land of Gods), the name Uttarancha­l state is popularly known by.

Dr Rakesh Belwal, a senior member of the wing and an as- sociate professor of Business in Oman for the past 11 years, elucidated chronology of historical events that took place in state and how the state has evolved to the present form. He also shed some light on the historical facts of Uttarakhan­d region and its contributi­on in the Indian Freedom Movement. He enlightene­d the audience citing the lyrics of the famous folk songs and provided a descriptiv­e account of the cultural events, folk, and theatres from the region.
