Breast cancer awareness week held at Al Assalah Towers
A ‘Breast cancer awareness week’ was held at Al Assalah Towers – a Saud Bahwan Residency – in Ghubra from November 9-14.
Featuring an interactive session with Dr Abha Singhvi, specialist general surgeon at Aster Al Raffah Hospital, and talks by cancer survivors and their family members, the event witnessed a good turnout by residents and members of the community.
The mobile mammography unit of Oman Cancer Association (OCA) was on hand for two days as part of the event to conduct mammograms for the residents.
The charity organisation has been working to spread awareness about the deadly disease and also supports cancer patients and survivors.
In her session, Dr Abha touched upon various aspects of the disease such as causes, risk factors, importance of prevention and early detection, methods of treatment and the need for regular follow-ups after completion of treatment.
Emphasising the need for selfexamination and regular screening, Dr Abha said, “Early detection of breast cancer is half the battle won. Self-examination is necessary from the age of 13 onwards. If any lumps, changes in the normal shape or skin texture, or skin discharge are noticed, they need to be checked by a physician.”
Nirupama Ashok, whose mother is a stage 4 breast cancer patient, shared her experiences as a family member. “There is a need to help elderly family members by raising awareness as they often tend to neglect this important part of the body,” she said.
Elaborating on the holistic approach adopted for her mother, she said, “Physical exercise and family support go hand in hand along with medical treatment to rehabilitate a cancer patient. Physiotherapy went a long way in helping my mother, who had become dependent for basic tasks, regain some of her bodily functions and mobility.”
Said Dr Wahid bin Ali al Kharusi, president of OCA, “The association is happy to support this initiative by the Al Assalah community.
“OCA has always aimed to provide assistance free of cost to further the cause of cancer awareness, detection and treatment.”
