49 cyclists go on Sur tour to mark 49th National Day
A group of 49 cyclists toured various parts of Sur on Saturday as part of the 49th National Day celebrations. Tourism Administration for South Sharqiyah governorate in cooperation with Sur Club for Cycling organised the 15km tour.
Speaking to Muscat Daily from Sur, Mansour Nasser Musallam al Araimi, head of Sur Club for Cycling, said, “The 49-minute non-stop ride began at 4pm from Khor al Batha area and ended at Al Bir roundabout.
“There was a lot of enthusiasm once the tour details were announced on social media. The cyclists carried the national flag and wore scarf bearing His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said’s photograph. We chose 49 cyclists to show our loyalty to the country and His Majesty the Sultan for progress and development in the last 49 years.”
Araimi said the club has organised many such tours to promote domestic tourism, and create awareness on cancer and beach cleanliness.
“We call on Omani youths to take part in such voluntary campaigns for the betterment of the society.”
Saud Hamed Musallam al Alawi, Director of Tourism Administration for South Sharqiyah governorate, said, “The event aimed to raise importance of sports in the society.
We also organised ‘Sur Treasure’ contest to promote tourist sites in the wilayat to attract adventure lovers and tourists.
“Thirty teams comprising five members each were shortlisted for the competition which
was held on November 23 from 8-11am at Sinaislah Fort in Sur. We are striving to organise more such events in future to support domestic tourism in South Sharqiyah governorate throughout the year.”
