49 cy­clists go on Sur tour to mark 49th Na­tional Day

A group of 49 cy­clists toured var­i­ous parts of Sur on Satur­day as part of the 49th Na­tional Day cel­e­bra­tions. Tourism Ad­min­is­tra­tion for South Shar­qiyah gov­er­norate in co­op­er­a­tion with Sur Club for Cy­cling or­gan­ised the 15km tour.

Speak­ing to Mus­cat Daily from Sur, Man­sour Nasser Musal­lam al Araimi, head of Sur Club for Cy­cling, said, “The 49-minute non-stop ride be­gan at 4pm from Khor al Batha area and ended at Al Bir round­about.

“There was a lot of en­thu­si­asm once the tour de­tails were an­nounced on so­cial me­dia. The cy­clists car­ried the na­tional flag and wore scarf bear­ing His Majesty Sul­tan Qa­boos bin Said’s pho­to­graph. We chose 49 cy­clists to show our loy­alty to the coun­try and His Majesty the Sul­tan for progress and de­vel­op­ment in the last 49 years.”

Araimi said the club has or­gan­ised many such tours to pro­mote do­mes­tic tourism, and cre­ate aware­ness on can­cer and beach clean­li­ness.

“We call on Omani youths to take part in such vol­un­tary cam­paigns for the bet­ter­ment of the so­ci­ety.”

Saud Hamed Musal­lam al Alawi, Di­rec­tor of Tourism Ad­min­is­tra­tion for South Shar­qiyah gov­er­norate, said, “The event aimed to raise im­por­tance of sports in the so­ci­ety.

We also or­gan­ised ‘Sur Trea­sure’ con­test to pro­mote tourist sites in the wilayat to at­tract ad­ven­ture lovers and tourists.

“Thirty teams com­pris­ing five mem­bers each were short­listed for the com­pe­ti­tion which

was held on Novem­ber 23 from 8-11am at Si­nais­lah Fort in Sur. We are striv­ing to or­gan­ise more such events in fu­ture to sup­port do­mes­tic tourism in South Shar­qiyah gov­er­norate through­out the year.”
