Rahm prevails over Fleetwood to clinch Race to Dubai title

Jon Rahm became the first Spaniard after the legendary Seve Ballestero­s to become the European No 1 when he won the DP World Tour Championsh­ip and the Race to Dubai on Sunday. At the Earth course of Jumeirah Golf Estates, in Dubai, UAE, the 25 year old started the day with five birdies in his first seven holes to pull clear of the field, then prevailed in a dramatic finish after he overcame a ferocious late charge by England’s Tommy Fleetwood, who made five birdies in the last seven holes. Starting the final round tied for the lead with France’s Mike LorenzoVer­a at 15-under par, the world No 5 Rahm shot a 68 to finish on 19-under par. Fleetwood closed with a seven-under par 65 which fell short by one shot. The win fetched Rahm a cheque of US$3mn, the biggest ever in the history of competitiv­e golf, while the Race to Dubai win meant he also secured the US$2mn from the Bonus Pool.

Wilder KOs Ortiz to retain WBC heavyweigh­t belt

Unbeaten Deontay Wilder landed a devastatin­g right hand to knock out Luis Ortiz in the seventh round and retain his World Boxing Council (WBC) heavyweigh­t title. The 34 year old Wilder remains on course to achieve his goal of unifying all four heavyweigh­t belts despite being largely outboxed by Ortiz before the explosive one-punch finish at the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas, US, late Saturday night. Unbeaten in 43 fights, the 'Bronze Bomber' recorded his tenth straight title defence to equal Muhammad Ali who achieved the feat between 1974 and 1978.

Flamengo beats River Plate to claim Copa Libertador­es

Brazil's Flamengo came back from the dead to break the hearts of holders River Plate and win the Copa Libertador­es in Lima, Peru, on Saturday with a thrilling late brace from Gabriel Barbosa that decided the final 2-1 at the death. Barbosa scored in the 89th minute and again in injury time to see his side bounce back from Rafael Santos Borre's 15th-minute opener for River after a game largely dominated by the Argentine side. After turning the game on its head in a frantic finale, Barbosa then got sent off along with River's Ezequiel Palacios. Flamengo's first Copa Libertador­es victory in 38 years means it will go to the Club World Cup in December.

Kipchoge, Dalilah win Athlete of the Year awards

Eliud Kipchoge, the first man to run a marathon in less than two hours, and 400m hurdles world champion Dalilah Muhammad won the World Athlete of the Year awards on Saturday. Kipchoge, 35, claimed governing body World Athletics' year-ending prize in Monaco after making history last month when he ran the marathon distance of 42.195km in 1hr 59min 40.2sec. American Muhammad won her award after a magnificen­t year that saw her set a world record of 52.20 seconds at the US Trials in Iowa in July before winning gold at the worlds in Doha with a new world record of 52.16s.
