The Canadian pair then edged out Khachanov and Rublev in a thrilling deciding-set tie-break. Canada secured a 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (7-5) victory on its second match point to finish a tie which lasted six and a half hours.

Earlier, Shapovalov had seen off Khachanov in a dramatic match. The in-form Rublev had made it four singles wins from as many matches this week by brushing aside Pospisil 6-4, 6-4.

Croatia to face either India or Pakistan

Madrid, Spain - Croatia will play either India or Pakistan to qualify for next year's Davis Cup, after the draw for the qualificat­ion stage was made on Sunday. The 2018 champion crashed out in the group stage of this week's tournament in Madrid.

Spain, Canada and the two losing semifinali­sts, Great Britain and Russia, automatica­lly qualify for the competitio­n next year, as well as Serbia and France, who have been granted the two wild card slots. It leaves 12 places for the winners of the qualifiers, which will be contested on the weekend of March 6 and 7.
