As part of its plans to promote and support the fisheries sector in the sultanate, the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries said that Omani companies are exporting fish to Russia.

An official at the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries (MoAF), said, “A number of local companies have begun exporting their products to Russia. Omani companies have completed the necessary procedures and approvals required.

This step will help increase investment options between the sultanate and Russia in the fisheries sector.”

He added that a delegation of Russian government experts visited the sultanate in September 2018 and met officials of MoAF and fish companies in Oman.

The ministry regulates fish exports to ensure a balance between exports and the needs of the local market keeping consumer interest in mind. The ministry also works to provide sufficient quantities of fish in local markets at affordable prices.

Talking about Omani fish exporting companies, the official said that, “There are 49 approved Omani companies exporting fish to regional and international markets such as Gulf countries, the European Union countries, African countries and North and South American countries. Of these 18 are in South Sharqiyah, 10 in Muscat, 8 in Al Wusta, 6 in Dhofar, 2 in North Sharqiyah, 2 in North Batinah, 2 in Dakhliyah and 1 in Buraimi.

Meanwhile, MoAF stated that Oman’s total fish production was up by 59 per cent to 553,000 tonnes last year compared to 18 per cent growth in 2017. Statistics shows that total value of fish stocks stood at RO269mn compared to RO183mn in 2017.
