Sultanate pledges all efforts at COP 25 climate conference
Madrid, Spain - The sultanate has affirmed its commitment to international obligations with regard to climate change.
The affirmation was made by H E Mohammed bin Salim al Toobi, Minister of Environment and Climate Affairs and head of the sultanate’s delegation in his speech at the 25th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change at the Climate Summit (COP 25).
“The negative effects of climate change have become an indisputable reality and the scientific reports, especially those issued by the climatechange relevant intergovernmental bodies.
“They have proven the close relationship between these impacts and increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere from the beginning of the industrial revolution to the present time. This is until climate change threatens all countries of the world with unprecedented effects, such as increasing tropical cyclones, melting glaciers, droughts and the relevant major impacts on the economy and the population.”
H E Toobi added, “The sultanate signed and ratified all agreements related to climate affairs starting with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change at the First Earth Summit in Brazil in 1992, ratified in 1994 and ended with the ratification of the Paris Agreement on April 24, 2019, as a confirmation to strengthen the efforts of the international community to support the measures and mitigate the negative effects of climate change.”
The 25th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change was launched in Madrid, on December 2. It will conclude on December 13.
