COACHES’ HIRING AND FIRING

-

London, UK - Everton appointed Carlo Ancelotti as the club's new manager on Saturday, with the experienced Italian taking charge at Goodison Park on a four-anda-half year deal. Ancelotti, 60, will not take charge until the Boxing Day visit of Burnley.

The three-time Champions League-winning coach was sacked by Napoli earlier this month but comes with a trophy-laden CV from spells at a clutch of Europe's top clubs, including Juventus, AC Milan, Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.

"This is a great club with a rich history and a very passionate fan base," Ancelotti said in a club statement. "There is a clear vision from the owner and the board to deliver success and trophies.

"That is something that appeals to me as a manager and I am thrilled at the prospect of being able to work with everybody at the club to help make that vision a reality."

Arsenal’s Arteta says ‘will be ruthless’

London, UK - Mikel Arteta has warned Arsenal's underachieving stars that he will be 'ruthless' as the new boss looks to restore a winning mentality to his troubled club.

Arteta, who had been working as an assistant to Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, was hired by Arsenal on Friday after agreeing a three-and-a-half-year contract to replace the sacked Unai Emery. The former Arsenal midfielder arrives at the Emirates Stadium to find a team in crisis following a wretched run that cost Emery his job and reaffirmed the sense the Gunners have lost their way since the final years of Arsene Wenger's reign.

Arteta, speaking at his official unveiling at the Emirates on Friday, made it clear he will take a hardline to ensure the malaise doesn't continue any longer. "I have to engage the players, when I was here with Man City (last week) everyone was a bit down," Arteta told reporters. "We have to have the right culture here, if we don't then the tree will shake.

"The ambition of this football club is very clear. You have to fight for trophies and be in Europe. The rest is not good enough."

The 37 year old won the FA Cup twice in a five-year playing career with Arsenal, then joined City to work with Guardiola after retiring in 2016.

Fiorentina fires manager Montella

Rome, Italy - Fiorentina announced on Saturday that it had fired coach Vincenzo Montella with the club struggling in 14th in Italian League

"Vincenzo Montella has been relieved of his duties as head coach of the first team," the club said on its website.

"The decision was taken following a long and detailed analysis of the team's performances and results."

"Given the need to rediscover the necessary grit and determination on the pitch and produce an immediate turnaround, the owners and management decided that a change of coach was the best option," the club continued.

Montella, a 45 year old former Italy winger, managed Fiorentina from 2012-15 leading the club to two fourthplace finishes in league before he was fired. After spells in charge at Sampdoria, AC Milan and Sevilla, he returned to Florence in April.

Forlan named Penarol boss

It's the 40 year old's first coaching job since hanging up his boots last year.

The winner of the Golden Ball at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa featured for Penarol between 2015-16.

As a player he helped Uruguay win the 2011 Copa America for a record 15th time. He also won the English Premier League with United in 2003 and the Europa League with Atletico seven years later.
