OCI card can be re­newed till June 30, 2020: Em­bassy

Ex­pa­tri­ates of In­dian ori­gin in Oman have been given time un­til June 30, 2020 to re­new their Over­seas Cit­i­zens of In­dia (OCI) card.

Ac­cord­ing to a no­tice is­sued by the Em­bassy of In­dia in Mus­cat, ‘This is to in­form that the Gov­ern­ment of In­dia has de­cided to grant a tem­po­rary re­lax­ation un­til June 30, 2020, in the fol­low­ing cases: In case, an OCI card holder be­low the age of 20 years has not got it re-is­sued on change of pass­port, he/she may travel on the strength of his/her ex­ist­ing OCI card bear­ing the old pass­port num­ber. This is sub­ject to the con­di­tion that along with the new pass­port, the OCI card holder car­ried the old pass­port men­tioned in the OCI card.’

The em­bassy added, ‘In case, the OCI card holder has at­tained 50 years of age, and has got his/her pass­port re­newed sub­se­quently, but has not got his/her OCI card re-is­sued on re­newal of the pass­port, he/she may travel on the strength of the ex­ist­ing OCI card along with the old and new pass­ports. How­ever, it is ad­vised that OCI card hold­ers take steps to com­ply with the ex­ist­ing guide­lines and re­new their OCI cards as re­quired by the rules.’

The guide­lines for the re­newal of OCI cards, ac­cord­ing to the em­bassy, are: ‘OCI cards need to be reis­sued each time a new pass­port is ac­quired by the card holder, up to the age of 20 years, and an OCI card is to be re-is­sued once on ac­quir­ing a new pass­port after com­plet­ing 50 years of age. The re-is­suance of an OCI card is not re­quired each time a pass­port is is­sued to a card holder be­tween 21 and 50 years of age.’
