How do you think the year 2019 was and how different do you think 2020 will be?

With 2019 ending today, by the grace of God, it was a wonderful year for me. I would always cherish the good memories. There are, however, huge challenges ahead. The best part is at the beginning of every year, I say that this year would be the best in my life.

The year was full of events. Lots of things have changed globally and in Oman. 2020 is expected to continue this trend with challenges requiring solutions to be implemented. The main challenges are employment opportunities and economic diversification.

Year 2019 witnessed disturbances in many parts of the world and not many peace initiatives were forthcoming. Environmentally too, the year was not good for the Earth with the formal announcement by the US to withdraw from the Paris climate agreement. Hopefully, 2020 will bring a new line of thinking on the subject, when a new administration takes over there.

A World Bank report states that the economy is likely to grow at a faster pace against a marginal decline in 2019. While 2019 has been challenging for the Mideast due to geopolitical tensions, there are rooms for sustainable improvement in Oman through economic diversification, tourism and Tanfeedh initiatives.

2019 has been a year of hope for the world. For the GCC, there were lots of promises amid turmoil especially in the oil and gas and petrochemical industry. I hope 2020 will be a year of change. Tremendous challenges await the world and the GCC.

This has been a great year for Oman as it did exceedingly well in the tourism sector. We see the country moving out of the oil dependency which was the case earlier.
