Shar­qiyah to cel­e­brate Omani En­vi­ron­ment Day with cy­cling tour on Jan 11

To cel­e­brate Omani En­vi­ron­ment Day, which falls on Jan­uary 8, and to pro­mote nat­u­ral re­serves, the Min­istry of En­vi­ron­ment and Cli­mate Af­fairs, in co­op­er­a­tion with Sur Club for Cy­cling, will or­gan­ise the Tour of Al Kamil W’Al Wafi in South Shar­qiyah.

Speak­ing to Muscat Daily from Sur, Man­sour Nasser Musal­lam al Araimi, head of Sur Club for Cy­cling, said, “The Min­istry of En­vi­ron­ment and Cli­mate Af­fairs in co­op­er­a­tion with Sur Club for Cy­cling will or­gan­ise the tour. The non-stop ride will have cat­e­gories for am­a­teurs and chil­dren. It will start on Jan­uary 11. The 4km ride for chil­dren will be­gin at 8am and the 20km ride for am­a­teurs will be­gin at 8.30am from Tiwi Ha­tim area.”

The tour is also be­ing con­ducted to pro­mote Al Saleel Na­tional Park which is close to the tour. “We are hold­ing a tour for chil­dren above 13 years. The idea is to en­cour­age them to take up cy­cling as a sport. Al Saleel Na­tional Park is a wildlife re­serve, con­sid­ered a habi­tat for the Ara­bian gazelle. The re­serve is lo­cated in the wilayat of Al Kamil W’Al Wafi in South Shar­qiyah gov­er­norate about 57km from Sur. The park cov­ers an area of 220sq km,” said Araimi.

He added that be­sides tours the club is in­ter­ested in a lot of other vol­un­tary ac­tiv­i­ties to en­gage all com­mu­nity mem­bers.

“In 2019, the club or­gan­ised a lot of tours to pro­mote do­mes­tic tourism and cre­ate aware­ness on the risks of can­cer. We will con­tinue to or­gan­ise these events to en­cour­age com­mu­nity mem­bers to par­tic­i­pate pos­i­tively in sport­ing events and pro­mote do­mes­tic tourism in South Shar­qiyah. We call on Omani youth to take part in such vol­un­tary cam­paigns for the bet­ter­ment of the so­ci­ety. Reg­is­tra­tion for the tour can be done on 95403020.” As many as 305,405 peo­ple vis­ited nat­u­ral re­serves in 2018, an in­crease of 25 per cent com­pared to 2017, stated the Na­tional Cen­tre for Statis­tics and In­for­ma­tion.
