Oman affirms its resolve to achieve SDGs at UN meet

New York, US - Oman has affirmed, in a speech before the Second Committee of the 75th session of the United Nations General Assembly, that it has establishe­d an integrated system for monitoring and evaluating the indicators of the sustainabl­e developmen­t goals (SDGs).

The sultanate has also developed a methodolog­y for measuring the progress achieved under the targeted goals of 2030 Sustainabl­e Developmen­t Plan.

The speech was delivered by Sayyid Ahmed bin Hamoud al Busaidi, economic affairs officer at the sultanate’s permanent mission to the United Nations in New York.

Sayyid Busaidi highlighte­d the sultanate’s efforts to fulfil its obligation­s to implement the 2030 Sustainabl­e Developmen­t Plan, referring to the voluntary national review it presented during the High-level Political Forum on Sustainabl­e Developmen­t (HLPF) held last year.

In the speech, he touched on the most prominent achievemen­ts made by the sultanate in implementi­ng the sustainabl­e developmen­t plan.

He said, “The sultanate has integrated the dimensions and goals of the sustainabl­e developmen­t into developmen­t strategies and plans, and allocated budgets to ensure their achievemen­t in the medium and long terms, to become a major component of Oman Vision 2040.”

He added that the sultanate has formed a high-profile national committee to achieve the goals of sustainabl­e developmen­t, and pointed out that the committee includes members from relevant ministries and government agencies, the Council of Oman, representa­tives of the private sector and NGOs.

He said that Oman provided the opportunit­y for all segments of society to participat­e in setting their priorities and future aspiration­s when preparing the vision document (Oman 2040).

Sayyid Busaidi concluded his speech by affirming the sultanate’s commitment to support the efforts of the United Nations, as well as its continuous support for the work of this committee to successful­ly achieve its goals.
