Knockout finals: Joint winners named after season called off

China’s Ye Jin and Chen Shasha sealed victory in the 49er FX class and booked their place for the Games with a narrow win over Molly Highfield and Sandy Wing Chi Choi from Hong Kong. India’s Ekta Yadav and Ritika Dangi ended the tournament in third place.

In the men’s RS:X medal race, Thai windsurfer Natthapong Phonopphar­at led from the first to the last day and claimed gold in impressive style to qualify. Yancy Kaibigan from the Philippine­s claimed silver and fellow Thai surfer Navin Singsart edged out Geylord Coveta of the Philippine­s by a single point to take the bronze.

The women’s RS:X class saw Amanda Ng Ling Kai of Singapore and Charizanne Napa from the Philippine­s trade places back and forth. The Singaporea­n eased to gold and qualified for the Olympics this summer, her second appearance at the Games after representi­ng Singapore at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Charizanne Napa took the silver and Ishwariya Ganesh of India claimed the bronze.

Later, the chief guest, Mohammed al Busaidi, Chairman of Omran, presented the awards in the presence of Khamis al Jabri, the Oman Sail CEO, competitor­s, coaches and race officials.

Following the instructio­ns of the Supreme Committee incharge of dealing with COVID-19 to suspend sports activities in the sultanate, Oman Cricket (OC) decided to call off their 2020-21 domestic season recently.

The OC decision meant that the A Division T20 league, Senior and Junior Cup knockout finals remained incomplete and the planned Ramadan T10 tournament was cancelled.

Orient Travels and Maniz Azad were named Senior Cup joint winners while Aflag Group and Pitspot were declared Junior Cup joint winners. The OC also announced the season's best performers in different divisions.

In the Premier Division, Kail Khalid of Al Turki NMC was adjudged the best batsman while left-arm spinner Shakeel Ahmad of IT Works bagged the best bowler award. Khalid scored 526 runs in nine games at an average of 75.1 and struck three hundreds while Ahmad picked 20 wickets at an average of 9.1.

The A Division honours were shared by ARTT duo - Zeeshan Siddiqui, (best batsman) and Aqil Khan (best bowler. Siddiqui scored 323 runs in six matches at an average of 80.8 and Khan bagged 21 wickets in seven games at an average of 8.2, with two five-wicket hauls.

Elsewhere, Rahul Chadha of Vanderland­e claimed a dream double for his exploits with bat and ball as he was declared the best bowler and best allrounder in the D Division. He took 14 wickets in seven matches and scored 271 runs at an average of 45.2.

Among the Omani players, Shuaib Ismail stood out while playing for two teams- OCT Ruwi and Maniz Azad - as he was named the best allrounder. OCT Al Hail-B’s Khalid Rahim and Samir Faizu were named best batsman and bowler among Omanis playing for one team.
