Construction of Duqm fishing port completed

The Special Economic Zone at Duqm (SEZAD) on Wednesday announced the completion of multi-purpose fishing port in Duqm.

SEZAD has handed over the fishing port to the consortium of companies led by the Oman Investment Authority (OIA). The OIA is represented in the consortium by the Oman Fisheries Development Company (FDO) and Oman Food Investment Company. The consortium also includes the French Lorient Port Company.

In a press statement, Eng Yahya bin Khamis al Zadjali, incharge of managing the operations of the Special Economic Zone at Duqm, said, “All the construction works of the fishing port have been completed and it has been handed over to the consortium, which will be responsible for developing the superstructure works and operating the port.”

He said the multi-purpose fishing port in Duqm has high potential to serve a number of sectors, including fisheries, fruits and vegetables, livestock, and tourism.

“The fishing port brings additional yards that can be used for tourism purposes and containers handling food activities, and it can attract the wooden ships supplying foodstuff. Further, the port is characterised by its ability to host commercial fishing activities,” Zadjali said.

Being the largest fishing port in the sultanate, the multi-purpose fishing port in Duqm is 10m deep, consisting of two breakwaters that are 3.3km long, a 1.3km fixed berth and six other floating berths.

In addition, there is a land designated for tourism purposes associated with the port, which is connected with the Fisheries Industries Zone and other projects in the Special Economic Zone at Duqm via a road network.

The multipurpose fishing port is one of the key projects in the SEZAD that seeks to enhance the zone’s capacity to take advantage of the fisheries available in the zone and the surrounding areas and utilise the distinctive location of Duqm in general at the Arabian Sea.
