Norwegian ship wins Sultan Qaboos Sailing Award

The Ministry of Defence, represente­d by the Royal Navy of Oman (RNO), presented the Sultan Qaboos Sailing Award in Gran Canaria, Spain, on Saturday.

In its tenth edition this year, the award went to the Norwegian ship Christian Radek for its impressive history in training for sailing.

The presentati­on ceremony coincided with the 52nd National Day of the sultanate and was held under the auspices H E Omar bin Saeed al Kathiri, Ambassador of Oman to Spain, in the presence of Brig Gen Tariq bin Isa al Raisi, Chief Staff Officer at RNO, a number of RNO personnel and officials of Gran Canaria island.

Several government and private maritime institutio­ns competed for the award this year, besides entities engaged in sailing.

The winner of the award was chosen during the annual conference of the Internatio­nal Associatio­n for Training in Sailing.

The Sultan Qaboos Sailing Award is supervised by the Ministry of Defence in cooperatio­n with Sail Training Internatio­nal. The award was launched in Norway in 2011 in response to the Royal orders of the late Sultan Qaboos bin Said.

The award is one of the world’s most prestigiou­s sailing

awards.
