Oman condoles as quake kills 162 in Indonesia
Muscat - Oman has ex
pressed its sympathy with Republic of Indonesia for the earthquake that struck the city of Cianjur in West Java, killing 162 people.
In a statement issued by the Foreign Ministry, Oman
also expressed sincere condolences to the Indonesian government and people, as well as families of the victims, wishing the injured a speedy recovery.
The earthquake shook Indonesia’s main island of Java, damaging dozens of buildings and sending residents into the capital’s streets for safety.
The US Geological Survey said the magnitude 5.6 quake was centered in the Cianjur region in West Java province at a depth of 10km.
“There are 46 dead people at the Cianjur regional hospital and around 700 in
jured people. Many were hurt because they were hit by collapsed buildings,” Indonesian National Disaster Mitigation Agency said.
Several landslides were reported around Cianjur. Dozens of buildings were damaged, including an Islamic boarding school and a
hospital, the agency said.
