The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism (MHT) in cooperation with the Quick Challenge Company (QCC) will be organising Sand Running Race in North Sharqiyah governorate on Friday.
Speaking to Muscat Daily, QCC founder Hazza al Jahmani said, “We have organised a series of winter sports competitions in North Sharqiyah starting from October 14. We will conclude the series with the Sand Running Race on November 25.”
To be held in the wilayat of Bidiyah, the race for the professionals will be for a distance of 10km and 5km for amateurs. “We expect over 55 contestants to take part in the race.”
The winter sports events are aimed at promoting tourist sites, boosting domestic tourism, and spreading awareness about the importance of various sports such as hiking and swimming, the organisers said.
“The events help shed light on adventure tourism, discover Omani talent in various sports and help them enhance their skills.”
The QCC founder informed that as part of the series of events, a mountain race was held in the wilayat of Bani Khaled on
October 14, while a bicycle race took place in the wilayat of Ibra on October 28. The Wadi Dayqa Challenge race in the wilayat of Dima Wa al Tayeen took place on November 4.
According to Jahmani, more than 250 contestants participated in the competitions, which witnessed a turnout of people from the age of nine to 60 years.
Talking about the challenges, he said financial and media support was difficult. “These competitions require big cash prizes to encourage young people to participate.”
He said the company holds many sports events and competitions with the aim of stimulating the tourism movement in the sultanate. In 2019, the company, in cooperation with MHT, held the first pentathlon in Oman. “We, in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, will hold the second edition of pentathlon soon.”
