Muscat - Local startup Carbon 6 hosted a series of workshops recently with an aim of raising awareness on circular economy.

The workshops included screening of a documentary, followed by moderated discussions. The sessions, which took place over the span of three weekends, targeted various industries including tourism and hospitality, energy, healthcare, sustainability and urban planning.

Explaining circular economy, Abeer Ali al Mukhaini, founder of Carbon 6, said, “It is a biomimicry concept that is derived from nature. It’s a model of production concept - the waste of one system is the energy of another, which is opposite of the current linear economy.”

She explained that a circular economy has lower carbon emissions than a linear economy. “Producing new materials results in carbon emissions. Circular economies minimise the need for producing new materials by maximising the re-use of resources, thus eliminating the carbon costs of producing new materials, which is the aim of reaching net zero emissions by 2050.”

Carbon 6 is endeavouring to spread awareness in all segments of society focusing on the bottom-to-top approach to reduce the communication gap and “be more relatable to the community - youth, entrepreneurs, students, academics and the public in general”, Abeer explained.

“We believe in the importance of community engagement, and spreading awareness and knowledge is one of our main activities.”

Carbon 6 is a social ideation startup founded in 2019. It was created with the aim of introducing social innovation to the community with an emphasis on sustainability. Its previous initiatives - Carbon Cycle 1 and Carbon Cycle 2 - targeted potential entrepreneurs and assisted them in identifying, validating and employing socially innovative ideas.

Abeer said, “Our startup explores the future of development practices by introducing emerging concepts such as social innovation and circular economy. Our mission is to create and find social innovation opportunities and introduce essential topics that will assist innovators in creating tangible and quantifiable impact to improve the status of the community by supporting development and transfer of practical solutions.”

Additionally, Carbon 6 focuses on community involvement, organising speaking engagements and online campaigns such as the #Carbon_i_commit campaign that encouraged members of the community to commit to environmentally friendly practices.
