‘GCC a reliable partner for security, stability’
The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) has emerged as a steadfast ally in promoting security and stability worldwide, Sayyid Badr bin Hamad al Busaidi, Foreign Minister, stated on the occasion of its 42nd anniversary.
The GCC was established on May 25, 1981, during a period of regional tension and political and economic challenges, prompting member countries to unify efforts and cooperation to foster economic integration, political cooperation and regional development.
The primary goals of the GCC were to enhance coordination, integration and interdependence among member states across various sectors, such as economic, finance, commerce, transportation, education, culture, health, media, tourism, legislation and administration. The council also emphasised scientific and technical progress, industrial development, agricultural advancements and joint projects, while encouraging private sector cooperation.
Sayyid Badr highlighted His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik's commitment to supporting the GCC'S progress. In his first speech after assuming the reins of power, His Majesty the Sultan expressed desire to work alongside other GCC leaders to advance cooperation and fulfil the aspirations of the people.
Recognising the notable achievements and developments of the GCC countries in various fields, Sayyid Badr emphasised the importance of highlighting these accomplishments to instil confidence and inspire further cooperation and development.
The Foreign Minister underlined the GCC'S success in bolstering its regional standing, fostering international interaction, and becoming a trusted partner in global efforts to strengthen security and stability. He emphasised that the current GCC stewardship, chaired by Oman, aims to foster economic integration and engage countries and international economic groups in free trade negotiations aligning with common interests.
Idris Abdul Rahman al Khanjari, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Sultanate of Oman to the United Nations, stressed on the importance of synergy and enhanced cooperation among GCC missions in Geneva. “This collaborative approach aims to achieve the goals and aspirations of member states, address emerging challenges, promote sustainable development, resolve conflicts, and contribute to global peace and stability.”
The Gulf states have played a significant role in resolving regional issues, including the Yemen crisis, facilitating the Syrian Arab Republic's return to the League of Arab States, supporting the election of a president in Lebanon, and addressing the Palestinian and Sudanese issues, as highlighted by Khanjari.
