Unified Municipal System project begins working towards smart cities with 1st meet
In a significant move towards digitalisation and modernisation of municipal work, the Executive Committee of the Unified Municipal System project convened on Tuesday at the Municipal Council Hall of Muscat Municipality.
This meeting is considered the first significant step in enhancing electronic readiness within municipal work, adopting advanced information technologies and applications.
The committee’s discussion revolved around the operational system, its expansion, and preparations for a tender to commence the project’s implementation phase.
The Unified Municipal System project stands as a key national endeavour aligned with Oman Vision 2040 for paving the way for the development of smart cities in different governorates. The initiative seeks to integrate modern technologies to specially enable services and employ artificial intelligence tools, culminating in a central digital system that will oversee the services offered by the municipal sector.
The project is driven by the goal of achieving the highest international standards in digital and governmental transformation.
The project’s oversight involves various specialised teams from different municipalities across the sultanate, working in coordination with a professional consulting firm. This collaborative approach ensures a comprehensive and well-rounded development process.
Launched in April last year, the first phase of the Unified Municipal System project concentrated on analysing the current technological infrastructure of municipalities, existing programmes, geographic information systems, smart city projects and plans, and the services provided by municipalities throughout Oman.
This phase involved assessing the current situation, identifying gaps, and crafting a future vision for municipal sector services.
Currently, the project committee is in the process of issuing a tender, set to be launched in February, to elevate the project into the implementation stage.
This development is a crucial step towards realising the vision of smart cities in Oman, reflecting the nation’s commitment to embracing digital transformation in municipal work.
