Moroccan runners triumph in 9th Oman Desert Marathon

Moroccan runner Rashid el Morabity emerged as the champion of the 9th edition of Oman Desert Marathon, which was held from Saturday (January 20) to Tuesday as part of North Sharqiyah’s winter 2024 events.

In a remarkable display of endurance, Rashid clinched the first spot in the male category, clocking a total time of 16:06:49.

In the female category, Aziza Raji, also from Morocco, secured the top position with a finishing time of 23:13:32.

The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism (MHT), in collaborat­ion with various government­al and private agencies, hosted this major event in the wilayat of Bidiyah.

The marathon, covering 165km, was divided into four stages of 42km, 55km, 47km, and 21km across the expansive sands of Sharqiya. The event witnessed enthusiast­ic participat­ion of over 700 athletes from all over the world, event organisers said.

The men’s category saw impressive performanc­es from Omani runners. Saleh al Saidi finished second (16:27:27), followed by Ghaith al Saeedi in third place (17:23:06).

In the women’s division, Aziza’s compatriot, Aziza al Amrany, finished second clocking 23:13.32, while French runner Veronique Messina came third, completing the run in 25hrs 38min 53sec.

Mahmoud bin Yahya al Dhahli, Governor of North Sharqiyah, expressed satisfacti­on over the marathon’s success.

“The Oman Desert Marathon is not just a sporting event but a significan­t tourism and economic activity. Its continuous success for nine consecutiv­e years, attracting world-class runners, underscore­s its global importance,” he said.

Dhahli emphasised the marathon’s role in attracting visitors and boosting local tourism in the wilayat of Bidiya, which significan­tly contribute to the region’s cultural and economic landscape.
