FIH president lauds Oman for hosting Hockey 5s World Cup
Tayeb Ikram, President of International Hockey Federation (FIH), commended Oman, represented by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth and Oman Hockey Association, for its exceptional efforts in organising the historic FIH Hockey5s World Cup 2024. The tournament, which will end on January 31, marks a significant milestone in the development of five-a-side hockey.
Sixteen national women’s squads took part in the tournament which ended on Satur
day. The men’s matches will commence on Sunday.
Ikram highlighted the successful conduct of the tournament and the strategic importance of hosting it in Muscat. “The newly constructed complex, boasting international standard facilities and services, was completed in a record time, positioning Oman as an upcoming hub for international championships and training camps for elite teams and clubs,” he said.
The complex is seen as a crucial element in broadening the reach of hockey in Oman, increasing participation and nurturing talent.
The opening ceremony of the tournament, held in scenic Muttrah near the sea in the lap of towering mountains, was praised for its cultural and artistic diversity. Ikram appreciated the presence of H H
Sayyid Theyazin bin Haitham al Said, Minister of Culture, Sports and Youth, at the ceremony, reflecting his high regard for the athletes participating from around the globe.
“The World Cup has contributed to the establishment of a national women's hockey team in Oman, enhancing the skills of Omani players through exposure to international teams and players. This interaction has provided a conducive environment for technical skill development and experience sharing,” the FIH president said.
