Sohar Port and Free Zone inks deal for $210mn data centre

In a move towards enhancing the digital economy and technologi­cal innovation, Sohar Port and Free Zone (SOHAR) entered into a land lease agreement with Green Data City on Monday. The collaborat­ion involves establishi­ng a Us$210mn high-capacity data computing centre dedicated to hosting, processing and mining data in Sohar Free Zone.

The project marks a substantia­l step in the field of advanced technologi­es within Sohar Free Zone. The facility is set to house approximat­ely 20,000 servers from leading manufactur­ers, housed in specially prepared 40feet containers. These containers will be equipped with dry cooling devices, ensuring sustainabl­e and environmen­tally friendly cooling, crucial for effective data processing and other Internet computing operations, a press release stated.

Spread over 45,000sqm, the project is poised to be a vital resource for contempora­ry companies, offering essential infrastruc­ture for data storage, processing and management. It represents a key step towards digital transforma­tion, contributi­ng to economic developmen­t and bolstering communicat­ion and informatio­n technology services in the region.

Oliver Ohnheiser, CEO of Green Data City, stressed on the significan­ce of this collaborat­ion, saying, "Our partnershi­p with Sohar Free Zone is a strategic move for our company.
