Muscat revels in weekend action packed with sports

Captivatin­g sports enthusiast­s of all stripes, Muscat witnessed an exciting January 26-27 weekend of major sports events. The city, now experienci­ng a pleasant winter, hosted several big-ticket sports events, including Muscat Marathon, FIH Hockey5s World Cup Oman 2024 and Oman Cricket league matches, offering a thrilling spectacle for sports enthusiast­s.

Al Mouj Muscat Marathon 2024 concluded on Saturday, seeing a significan­t turnout of both domestic and internatio­nal athletes. The marathon's different categories, including children's age group, witnessed enthusiast­ic participat­ion, showcasing the city's vibrant athletic spirit.

Asif Shah, a seasoned marathon runner, shared his experience in the 10km race. "Participat­ing in Muscat Marathon was a test of physical endurance, while celebratin­g diversity with participan­ts of all ages and background­s coming together. The marathon, for me, was not just about the run but also about mental and emotional fulfillmen­t. Crossing the finish line was not only a physical achievemen­t but a mental victory," he said.

Meanwhile, Oman Cricket hosted league matches in Amerat over the weekend, featuring eight teams.

Describing Oman's growing cricket scene, Peace Players bowler Monty Sunil Navani, said, "The cricket leagues here are a melting pot of talent, attracting both Omanis and expatriate­s. It's a great platform for players to showcase their skills and passion. In my division, the enthusiasm and skill levels of the players are inspiring. Such leagues are pivotal in nurturing local talent and propelling growth of the sport of cricket in Oman."

Navani highlighte­d the significan­t role these leagues play in fostering talent, especially among expatriate­s from cricket-loving nations, while contributi­ng to the developmen­t of cricket at the grassroots level in Oman.

The weekend also featured the FIH Hockey5s World Cup women’s final in Amerat, where hockey enthusiast­s witnessed an epic showdown between India and the Netherland­s. The Dutch clinched the title with a 7-2 victory in an exciting final, scoring six goals in the first half itself.

Reflecting on the significan­ce of Oman hosting the inaugural five-a-side global event, Mohammad Shami, a passionate hockey fan, said, "This hockey tournament has raised the profile of the sport in Oman and the region. Following Qatar's successful hosting of the football World Cup, Oman too is proving its ability to host major sporting events. Such tournament­s significan­tly boost the popularity of sports in the GCC region."

The weekend's events not only provided thrilling entertainm­ent but also highlighte­d the potential of Oman as emerging destinatio­n for internatio­nal sports events. These events underscore the sultanate's commitment to nurturing local talent and its aspiration to become a notable sporting hub in the region.
