MTCIT embarks on space industry training programme for citizens
The Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology (MTCIT) has unveiled an ambitious training programme for the citizens to bolster Oman’s presence in the space industry.
The initiative is set to unfold over the next decade promising significant advancement in the country’s engagement with space science and technology - a field that underpins critical aspects of contemporary life, including communication, weather forecasting, and satellite navigation.
According to a statement from MTCIT, the programme will kick off in the first half of 2024 with three specialised workshops, developed in partnership with the Code Academy. It aims to cater to a diverse group of 75 participants, including jobseekers, government employees with specialised roles, startups, small and medium enterprises (SMES), and individuals with a keen interest in space science and its applications.
The pioneering programme is designed to cultivate a skilled Omani workforce proficient in space technology, artificial satellite utilisation, and artificial intelligence. The curriculum is comprehensive, covering topics such as artificial intelligence, spatial mapping, Earth observation data analysis, cloud computing for disaster management, space project management, and space entrepreneurship.
H E Said Hamood al Mawali, the Minister of Transport, Communications and Information Technology, highlighted several key milestones anticipated by the programme.
Noteworthy among them is the launch of a satellite by 2025, the development of Earth observation capabilities via low-orbit satellites, and the establishment of incubators for space sector startups, scheduled between 2024 and 2025.
