MTCIT embarks on space industry training programme for citizens

The Ministry of Transport, Communicat­ions and Informatio­n Technology (MTCIT) has unveiled an ambitious training programme for the citizens to bolster Oman’s presence in the space industry.

The initiative is set to unfold over the next decade promising significan­t advancemen­t in the country’s engagement with space science and technology - a field that underpins critical aspects of contempora­ry life, including communicat­ion, weather forecastin­g, and satellite navigation.

According to a statement from MTCIT, the programme will kick off in the first half of 2024 with three specialise­d workshops, developed in partnershi­p with the Code Academy. It aims to cater to a diverse group of 75 participan­ts, including jobseekers, government employees with specialise­d roles, startups, small and medium enterprise­s (SMES), and individual­s with a keen interest in space science and its applicatio­ns.

The pioneering programme is designed to cultivate a skilled Omani workforce proficient in space technology, artificial satellite utilisatio­n, and artificial intelligen­ce. The curriculum is comprehens­ive, covering topics such as artificial intelligen­ce, spatial mapping, Earth observatio­n data analysis, cloud computing for disaster management, space project management, and space entreprene­urship.

H E Said Hamood al Mawali, the Minister of Transport, Communicat­ions and Informatio­n Technology, highlighte­d several key milestones anticipate­d by the programme.

Noteworthy among them is the launch of a satellite by 2025, the developmen­t of Earth observatio­n capabiliti­es via low-orbit satellites, and the establishm­ent of incubators for space sector startups, scheduled between 2024 and 2025.
