North Sharqiyah winter fest draws record crowds
The ongoing North Sharqiyah Winter Festival 2024 is attracting an extraordinary number of visitors to Bidiya Public Park, venue of the celebrations from January 20 to February 10.
Held under the auspices of the Governor of North Sharqiyah in collaboration with various public and private sector entities, besides the local community, the festival has become a focal point of cultural and recreational activities.
In its first 19 days, the festival attracted over 320,000 visitors from Oman and abroad, with a single-day record of 31,000 visitors.
Nasser bin Mohammed al Hasani, Director General of North Sharqiyah Municipality and Chairman of Organising Committee of the festival, said the turnout was unexpected. “Initially projected to welcome around 200,000 guests, the festival's diverse family-oriented activities and competitive events have significantly boosted visitor numbers.”
Renowned for its wide array of cultural, artistic, entertainment and sporting events, more visitors are expected to attend in the last few days, Hasani noted. Opening of the inaugural threeday Film and Desert Festival on Wednesday evening is expected to further boost visit numbers. The first of its kind in the region, the Film and Desert Festival promises an enriching experience through various engaging events.
Badr bin Ahmed al Habsi, Chairman of Technical Committee for Events, detailed the wide array of programmes that are being held, including a heritage village and an open-air theatre. The heritage village - a standout feature - showcases activities of Omani Women’s Association, the agricultural sector and desert life, besides holding an exhibition by small and medium enterprises.
Organised by Oman Film Society, the Film and Desert Festival will see participation from 18 countries, screening a total of 66 films.
North Sharqiyah Winter Festival plays a crucial role in promoting tourism, bolstering the local economy and providing a communal space for families.
