Global conference on sustainabi­lity of heritage from Feb 24

The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism (MHT), in collaborat­ion with the UNESCO Chair for World Heritage Management and Sustainabl­e Tourism in the Arab Region, will host an internatio­nal conference titled ‘Opportunit­ies for Heritage: Fostering Innovation, Conservati­on and Sustainabi­lity’. Scheduled from February 24 to 27, the event will take place at German University of Technology in Oman, Halban.

To open under the patronage of H E Salim Mohammed al Mahrouqi, Minister of Heritage and Tourism, the conference will delve into the economic and social potentials of tangible and intangible heritage. The meet represents a commitment at the highest levels to the preservati­on and innovative utilisatio­n of heritage for sustainabl­e developmen­t.

An official from MHT outlined the conference's focus on identifyin­g and leveraging heritage as a driver for economic and social growth. Key themes include addressing heritage conservati­on in conflict situations, financing mechanisms for heritage and tourism at World Heritage sites, and exploring cutting-edge approaches for heritage management that consider long-term sustainabi­lity and environmen­tal impacts.

Expected to draw a varied group of attendees, including heritage management experts, tourism profession­als, academics and policymake­rs, the conference underscore­s a collective effort to tackle global challenges in heritage conservati­on and sustainabl­e tourism.

Participan­ts will have the opportunit­y to engage in discussion­s on practical strategies for heritage management, especially in complex scenarios, fostering a rich exchange of ideas and best practices. The event also promises valuable networking opportunit­ies for those committed to heritage preservati­on, tourism and sustainabi­lity.
