Let’s Read invites entries for The Children’s Writing Competion’24

The Dar Al Atta’a Let’s Read Programme is delighted to announce the launch of its 18th Children’s Writing Competitio­n. Students aged 8 to 18 are invited to submit an essay on ‘My Hero’ - this could be an historical figure, a presentday personalit­y, or someone known who has shown great courage and heroism.

The entries will be judged on certain criteria, including a detailed descriptio­n of the setting where the heroism took place, and relatable and vivid character portrayal, describing the hero’s physical features and personalit­y traits. The judges will also be looking for a dramatised and exciting story, giving details of the hero’s courage and bravery.

The hero/heroine may have rescued someone from danger or defended a victim from bullying. They may have put themselves in danger to help others or to report the truth. It could be someone who has fought bravely against disease, or injury, or lived bravely with disability. It could also be someone who has achieved greatness.

Entrants should include a photo of their hero. The word count should not exceed 500 words - in English or Arabic.

Jane Jaffer, founder of the Let’s Read Programme and the Children’s Writing Competitio­n, said, ‘The winning entries will win great prizes. The judges are looking forward to reading about interestin­g/inspiring characters.’

Students can submit their entries in person at the Let’s Read Bookshop in Oman Avenues Mall. Email English entries to: letsreadom­an@gmail .com. Arabic entries can be emailed to: maythaa.1988 @gmail.com. by April 6 with the student’s name, age, phone number and email address and student’s school telephone number and email.
