Oman-japan ties A source of inspiration

- Abdullah Mohamed Bahwan Chairman of the Board, Oman-japan Friendship Association

On behalf of all Members of the Board of Oman-japan Friendship Association (OJFA), I take this opportunity to convey warm and heartfelt greetings to His Majesty Emperor Naruhito of Japan on the auspicious occasion of his 64th birthday.

It is a matter of joy that this year, Oman is celebrating the fourth anniversary of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik’s Accession Day. Under the wise and visionary leadership and guidance of His Majesty Sultan Haitham, Oman is making rapid progress on all fronts, guided by Oman Vision 2040. We pray to the Almighty to bless His Majesty with good health and a long life.

OJFA celebrates the deeprooted and long-standing relationship between Oman and Japan. Established in January 1974, OJFA - in close co-operation with the Embassy of Japan - has played a pivotal role in nurturing lasting bonds between the two great nations through a range of impactful events and activities in the fields of culture, society, economy, arts and science.

The friendship between Oman and Japan is truly inspiring. It is forged on shared values and mutual respect. It has weathered the test of time, fostering deeper understanding of each nation’s rich and diverse culture and heritage. It is interesting to note that our two nations have accomplished a remarkable milestone of sharing this unique relationship for over 50 years. This friendship is testament to the passion, commitment and understanding that have continued to play a binding role over the years.

OJFA has been a distinct platform for cultural exchange and deeper, more meaningful people-to-people connections. The association, in close co-operation with the Embassy of Japan, has held several events that have showcased the inspiring heritage and culture of Japan here in Oman.

Last year in November, the Ship for World Youth (SWY)

Committee-oman commenced the 14th SWYAA Global Assembly in Muscat under the patronage of H E Khalid bin Hashil al Muslahi, Undersecretary for Administrative and Financial Affairs in Foreign Ministry. A total of 141 alumni from 25 countries participated in the opening ceremony. SWY is the international youth exchange programme sponsored by the Japanese government, and Oman has been one the most active participating countries.

In the same month, OJFA - in co-operation with the Embassy of Japan - commenced a Japanese language course conducted by a native Japanese language speaker.

Apart from these, several activities, like book launches and specialised workshops for children, offered people in Oman opportunities to understand, be inspired and absorb the subtle nuances of Japanese culture.

Beyond cultural bonds, Oman and Japan have a long-time partnership in the area of trade. Through exports and imports both Oman and Japan have benefitted from each other’s strengths. Japanese advancements in engineering have led to export of products like machinery, electronics, steel, iron, automotive and more to Oman. Japanese companies have also made their presence felt in Oman through joint ventures in various sectors including the growing energy sector. Similarly, Oman - a nation reputed for its oil and gas, aluminium and fishery products - has remained one of the largest exporters of these products to Japan.

Today on this special occasion, OJFA reiterates its commitment to taking this beautiful bond of friendship between Oman and Japan to even greater heights.

Once again, on behalf of all the board members of OJFA, I convey sincere greetings to His Majesty Emperor Naruhito on his 64th Birthday.

On this special day, may God Almighty grant His Majesty good health and a long life. And may the deep-rooted ties between Oman and Japan continue to be a source of inspiration.
