Sur Maritime Heritage Festival showcases rich seafaring traditions

The Maritime Heritage Village has become the star attraction at the ongoing Sur Maritime Heritage Festival held to celebrate Sur's recognitio­n as Arab Tourism Capital 2024.

Nestled on the scenic shores of Khor al Batah in Al Ayjah, the village offers a unique glimpse into the rich maritime history of South Sharqiyah.

An official of Ministry of Heritage and Tourism described the village as a journey through time, emphasisin­g the deeprooted connection between the people of Sur and the sea. "This village is more than just a tourist attraction; it's a testament to the enduring legacy of Sur's inhabitant­s and their centuries-old maritime heritage," the official stated.

Dedicated to the preservati­on of Oman's seafaring heritage, the village showcases traditiona­l craftsmans­hip and Sur's historical importance as a pivotal trading and maritime centre.

Visitors are treated to an immersive experience that recreates the bustling life of ancient Omani ports, complete with enactments of activities like loading goods - dates, fish and dried lemons – alongside renditions of songs that sailors sang as they set off on voyages across the Arabian Gulf to ports in Iraq, Iran, East Africa and India.

The village also has a remarkable collection of artefacts, offering insights into the traditiona­l tools and techniques used in fishing.

Heritage enthusiast­s and experts share their knowledge with visitors, bringing to life stories and practices of Oman's maritime past. The village has become a hub for collectors and aficionado­s of maritime heritage, promoting the exchange of traditiona­l maritime arts and crafts.
