In a step towards enhancing building safety standards in the sultanate, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning has signed a cooperation agreement with International Code Council (ICC) to develop a set of six comprehensive building codes.

The agreement, signed recently by H E Dr Khalfan bin Saeed al Shueili, Minister of Housing and Urban Planning, and Judy Zakreski, Vice-president of Global Services at ICC, consolidates the commitment to creating tailored building codes that align with Oman's unique circumstances and goals.

Reputed for its extensive experience in formulating and implementing building codes globally, ICC will leverage its expertise to customise laws for Oman. The agreement underscores the joint commitment of the parties to establish high standards in construction safety and methodologies, with a focus on safety standards, sustainability and technology integration. Project completion is anticipated by early 2026.

Judy expressed pride in collaborating with the ministry, highlighting the significance of Oman's building codes in promoting safe, environmentally friendly and sustainable construction methods.
