- Our Correspondent Muscat

Muscat Municipality is geared up to manage an expected increase in demand for fruits and vegetables during Ramadan at Mawaleh Central Market for Fruits and Vegetables.

With a strategic plan in place to ensure sufficient supply and stocks, the municipality aims to meet consumer needs efficiently during the holy month.

A Muscat Municipality official outlined the measures taken to secure a steady supply of produce. "We are encouraging traders to ramp up direct imports and have collaborated with the Omani Farmers Society to ensure the availability of local products. Our efforts have already seen a significant increase in shipments, with 1,073 trucks delivering fresh fruits and vegetables to the market between February 10 and March 10."

To align with Ramadan's timing, the market's working hours have been adjusted. Wholesale stores will be open from 4am to 5pm, while retail and local production stores will operate in both morning and evening sessions on all days except Friday. The market has designated specific gates for entry of various types of vehicles at set hours to streamline operations.

"In anticipation of the Ramadan rush, we've stepped up inspection on food establishments in the market. Our focus is on ensuring compliance with health standards in the storage, display and sale of perishable items, particularly in restaurants, cafes and food stores, to maintain hygiene in food preparation and handling," the official added.

The municipality is working closely with other entities, like Royal Oman Police and the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources, to manage traffic effectively and ensure the smooth entry of refrigerated vehicles. Collaboration with the Quarantine and Food Safety Department will facilitate swift processing and delivery of goods.

Additionally, a crucial partnership with Consumer Protection Authority will ensure monitoring of prices to prevent market violations during peak season.

These comprehensive measures by Muscat Municipality are designed to make sure that Mawaleh Central Market remains well-equipped to serve the community's needs during Ramadan, reflecting a commitment to health, efficiency and consumer protection.
