This celebration highlighted her significant contribution to cultural heritage through the transformation of her ancestral home into a repository of Omani history.
The accolade was part of the Smara Arab Forum for Poetry, hosted by the Sakia El Hamra Association in Morocco on March 10, in alignment with the International Women’s Day.
In a conversation with Muscat Daily, Zakiya shared her appreciation for the recognition, underscoring her role as a beacon of inspiration for Arab women. “I was honoured as an inspiring model for Arab women, thanks to my efforts in transforming my father’s house into a museum.”
Her initiative has not only preserved her family's history but also enriched the cultural landscape of the region.
Zakiya’s efforts in promoting heritage preservation through voluntary service have also been recognised with the Sultan Qaboos Award for Volunteer Work in 2019, affirming her commitment to cultural conservation.
Under Zakiya’s stewardship, the Western House blossomed into a celebrated landmark, drawing visitors from Oman
and abroad. It serves as a testament to her dedication to preserving and showcasing Omani heritage.

Zakiya narrated the genesis of the museum, rooted in her fascination with history and her resolve to safeguard ancestral legacies. With the support of her family and local community, she revitalised her father’s house, curating a collection that spans various facets of Omani life and history.
The museum’s exhibits include a rich array of antiques from old manuscripts and currencies to traditional cooking implements, personal adornments, and handicrafts. This assortment offers a window into the everyday lives of Omanis through the ages.
