MOE celebrates Down Syndrome Internatio­nal Day on March 21

The Ministry of Education, represente­d by the Directorat­e-general of Special Education and Continuous Learning and the School of Intellectu­al Education, celebrated Down Syndrome Internatio­nal Day, which this year comes with the slogan ‘Ending the Stereotype’, under the patronage of artist Alia al Farsi, and in the presence of Dr Thuraiya al Rashidi, director-general of the Directorat­e-general of Special Education and Continuous Learning.

The celebratio­n took place at the School of Intellectu­al Education, coinciding with the celebratio­n of the Down Syndrome Internatio­nal Day, which falls on March 21 every year in accordance with United Nations General Assembly Resolution, a press release said.

The ceremony included the inaugurati­on of the logo of the School of Intellectu­al Education, which includes symbolic connotatio­ns of the mentally disabled students who need care until they gradually acquire skills with their own care. During the ceremony, the winning videos were shown in a competitio­n to produce a video carrying a message for people with Down Syndrome, which was announced by the School of Intellectu­al Education. After that, the patronage of the ceremony, artist Alia Al Farsi, honoured the winners of the competitio­n.

The celebratio­n was accompanie­d by an exhibition aimed at highlighti­ng the artistic works of students with Down Syndrome, and the presentati­on of the

Banan Student Company, which is concerned with printing students’ drawings on fabric, in addition to the presentati­on of the ‘With Us, Your Lesson is More Enjoyable’ initiative, which is an initiative targeting students with mental disabiliti­es, based on the principles of designing interactiv­e electronic content, that begins with the analysis phase and ends with the production phase of interactiv­e lessons in which the student is the focus of the learning process.
