NEW CAMPAIGN TO CURB BEGGING IN MUSCAT
A campaign titled ‘Don't Encourage Them’ has been launched in Muscat governorate to address the issue of begging through online posters.
According to a statement, the governorate is taking a decisive stand against begging with a new public awareness initiative. ‘In response to the Public Prosecution’s cautionary notice against begging and exploitation of minors for begging purposes, the Governorate of Muscat has launched a series of online posters under the theme ‘Don't Encourage Them’ to combat this practice.’
Begging in mosques, on roads, at commercial centres and any other public place is socially unacceptable and strictly prohibited under Omani law. Begging has been criminalised as promulgated by Royal Decree No 7/2018.
The statement further highlighted the importance of social responsibility and collective action in addressing the issue. The campaign posters have slogans such as ‘Be the hand that constructs, not the hand that destroys’, ‘Together, let us work to stop begging’, ‘Be responsible and participate in reducing begging’, and ‘Don't encourage beggars.
