Oman condemns Damascus bombing

Oman’s Foreign Ministry has condemned and denounced a bombing that targeted the Iranian consulate in the Syrian capital Damascus.

In an official statement, the ministry said the bombing was a violation of Syria’s sovereignty and all international diplomatic laws and statutes, while calling for the protection and preservation of diplomatic and consular missions.

The ministry stressed the need to stop the escalation in the region and reject aggression and other actions that threaten security and stability, and conveyed condolences to the families of the victims while wishing a speedy recovery to the injured.

On Tuesday, Moscow called for a UN Security Council meeting over the suspected Israeli strike on Iran’s diplomatic mission in Damascus, according to Dmitry Polyansky, First Deputy Permanent Representative of Russia to the UN. The meeting was scheduled to take place on Tuesday, he said on Telegram.

At least 11 people were killed in Monday’s attack, including one Lebanese and three Syrian nationals. Among those killed were two generals from the Islamic

Revolutionary Guard Corps, elite units of the Iranian armed forces, Brig Gen Mohammad Reza Zahedi and his deputy, Gen Mohammad Hadi Haji Rahimi, along with five other military advisers.

The Iranian mission to the UN described the Israeli air strike on the consulate in Damascus a ‘cowardly terrorist act’ and a ‘blatant violation of the UN Charter’, and called on the Security Council to condemn the strike and take action.

Iran and Syria accused Israel of orchestrating the attack, with Tehran warning of a ‘serious response’, and the Iran-backed Lebanese group Hezbollah saying the strike will be met with ‘punishment and revenge’. Iran also said it would hold the US answerable due to its support of Israel.
