Vehicle registrations reach 1.7mn in Oman
Oman recorded 11,452 new vehicle registrations during the first two months of 2024, with total number of vehicle registrations reaching nearly 1.7mn, according to the latest figures from the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI).
As of the end of February 2024, Oman recorded registration of total 1,678,845 vehicles compared with 1,667,393 vehicles in December 2023. Number of vehicles registrations in February grew by 4% yearon-year as compared to the same month a year ago.
Private vehicles dominate the registrations, accounting for 79.4% or 1,333,169 of the total in February. This is closely followed by 246,156 commercial vehicles, the NCSI data showed.
Rental vehicles made up 2% of the total at 34,538 vehicles, which is 16.5% higher compared to February 2023 numbers. A total of 27,915 taxis were registered in this period. Government agencies maintain a fleet of 11,680 registered vehicles.
The number of motorcycles registered were 7,224, while driving instruction vehicles totalled 5,375. Temporary registrations, including those for inspection, export and import, accounted for 10,619 registrations. Farming tractors – 1,268 units – and diplomatic vehicles – 901 – were the other categories of vehicles registered.
The data underscores the diverse range of vehicles operating in Oman and provides a window into the nation’s transport trends.
A breakdown by vehicle weight shows the predominance of lighter vehicles, those weighing less than three tonnes totalled 1,520,936 (over 90% of total vehicles). In contrast, 71,620 vehicles exceeding ten tonnes were registered in February this year. Vehicles in the threeseven and seven-ten tonnes categories totalled 48,687 and 37,602 vehicles, respectively.
