Embracing the essence of Ramadan

- Our Correspondent Muscat

With the holy month of Ramadan now in its final week, the sultanate is witnessing grand community events as well as the cherished simplicity of family gatherings. The essence of Ramadan shines through in intimate family reunions as members share modest meals and pray together, embodying the true spirit of this holy period.

In the tranquil setting of their home in Honda Road, the Hassan family, residents of Oman for over a decade, observes Ramadan with a blend of traditional fervour and quiet devotion. Syed Zaib Hassan, his wife Alia and their four children, uphold customs passed down through generations, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere in their home. The family has been joined by Zaib’s brother Aqeel, who is experiencing his first Ramadan in Oman.

The Hassan household comes alive at sunset with iftar. The aroma of homemade dishes, lovingly prepared by Alia, fills the air. This evening, she has prepared an enticing spread of biryani, pakoras and sweets. "My daughters and I manage the kitchen despite fasting with joy, ensuring our family tradition of eating together continues," Alia said.

Reflecting on another family tradition, Zaib recounted tales of generosity and hospitality. His grandfather, a revered figure in Oman’s Pakistani community, was known for his benevolence particularly during Ramadan, a tradition Zaib is keen on continuing.

The family’s hospitality extends beyond their home, distributing iftar meals among neighbours, embodying the Ramadan spirit of serving humanity.

The difference in Ramadan in Pakistan and Oman is all too obvious to Aqeel. He notes the vibrant community spirit back home, contrasting it with the intimate family-focused celebrations in Oman. “But the essence of Ramadan, emphasising reflection, service and community, remains the same,” Aqeel said.

The Hassans also partake in communal iftars, fostering camaraderie within their neighbourhood. This gesture of sharing not only strengthens community bonds but also inadvertently puts Alia's culinary skills in the spotlight. Her eldest son proudly declares her biryani is “unmatched”

"My children and I venture out every evening to distribute iftar meals in our neighbourhood. It's important to do something for the community and humanity this month. Balancing work, studies and fasting presents its challenges, but my entire family, including children, commits to fasting," Zaib said.

The Hassan family's commitment to tradition, generosity and community service grows stronger with each passing day of Ramadan, mirroring countless families who find time for spiritual renewal and reaffirmation of social ties during the month.
