H E Said bin Hamood al Mawali, Minister of Transport, Communications and Information Technology, has revealed a comprehensive vision for the advancement of Oman's transportation sector.

In an interview with Radio Muscat FM last week, he emphasised the need for decisive action in the next decade, particularly in implementing an integrated public transport system in Muscat and initiating flights to Jabal Akhdar.

The long-awaited Muscat Metro project's feasibility study has been finalised and is poised for presentation to the Council of Ministers soon, H E Mawali informed.

He underscored the ongoing efforts of Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology (MTCIT) to combat traffic congestion in Muscat through extensive road projects and expansions spearheaded by Muscat Municipality.

Highlighting the urgency of the situation in the capital area, he cited projections forecasting a significant decline in average travel speeds without intervention. "The current average speed in Muscat is approximately 55kmph, which is deemed acceptable. However, studies sug

gest a drop to a mere 27kmph without intervention by 2030. Such a scenario is untenable."

H E Mawali further stated that public transportation is indispensable for sustainable development of the capital city. “Without substantial investment in mass transit, we risk exacerbating congestion and prolonging travel times in the future."

He emphasised the government's commitment to enhancing tourism accessibility, particularly through introduction of flights to Jabal Akhdar. Initial plans involve connecting Jabal Akhdar with Muscat, with future expansion envisaged to include neighbouring countries.

Additionally, frequency of flights to Masirah Island will be increased, while new routes introduced to Al Hallaniyat Islands and Al Mazyouna.

H E Mawali also disclosed a plan to expedite the establishment of Khasab Airport, with a design tender slated for this year. The chosen location in the Hattut area aims to optimise airspace utilisation and mitigate impact of adverse weather conditions on aircraft operations. The airport is projected to be operational in 48 months.
