‘Women on Wheels’ breaks gender stereotypes, promotes inclusivity
In a pioneering programme aimed at advancing gender diversity and inclusivity within the sultanate's workforce, an Omani company has introduced an initiative called ‘Women on Wheels’
The endeavour by Readymix Muscat, a member of Holcim Group specialising in premixed concrete supply, represents a crucial step in breaking down occupational stereotypes and enabling women to enter professions traditionally dominated by men.
Huda Salim al Mahrouqi, one of Oman's first female heavyduty truck drivers, has become an icon of the transformative impact such initiatives can have. Employed by Readymix Muscat, Huda expressed her gratitude for the training and employment opportunities that spurred both her personal and professional growth.
Readymix Muscat claimed that it is the first company in the
Gulf region to initiate such a programme, aligning with its vision to introduce groundbreaking and supportive pathways for women's development in various professional fields.
Daniel Mendible, General Manager of Readymix Muscat, noted the increasing number of women in the company, crediting the Women on Wheels programme as a key factor in this change. According to Mendible, the initiative underscores the company's commitment to a competence-driven approach in embracing diversity across its operations.
In many industries worldwide, significant gender disparities persist, often reinforced by longstanding cultural norms and expectations. Initiatives such as Women on Wheels challenge these norms by creating opportunities for women in roles they have historically been excluded from, thereby promoting a more inclusive and diverse working environment.
Shameem Mansoor al Mahrizi, Quality Control Engineer at Readymix Muscat, played a crucial role in launching this initiative in Oman. Starting as an intern in August 2023, Shameen proposed the idea to the company but learnt that the Holcim Group had similar progammes in other countries. As a result, Shameem had the privilege to take lead and launch the programme in Oman.
