OSW Awards recognise excellence in sustainability
This year’s awards for Oman Sustainability Week (OSW), a highly regarded event co-hosted by Oman Environmental Services Holding Company - be'ah - and CONNECT (Oman Exhibitions Organising Company), were presented to sustainability leaders on Sunday at Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre.
The presentation ceremony, held under the patronage of H E Salim bin Nasser al Aufi, Minister of Energy and Minerals, drew participation of government delegates, industry leaders and key influencers in the environment, social and governance (ESG) sectors.
This year's OSW Awards were based on a comprehensive set of criteria framed in collaboration with the Center for Sustainability and Excellence in Chicago, US. Adhering to the global standards for sustainability impacts (GRI), the awards aim to recognise and propel organisations towards achieving the objectives of Oman Vision 2040, the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGS), and the nation's commitment to achieving Net Zero by 2050.
A notable introduction to this year's awards categories was 'Eco-mobility', designed to complement the existing ESG categories that include government, academia, small businesses, and medium to large businesses. The Eco-mobility category, evaluated based on criteria set by the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology, signifies a leap towards integrating sustainable practices in transportation.
Dr Mohab Ali al Hinai, VicePresident of Sustainability and Circular Economy at be’ah, emphasised the awards' role in acknowledging the leadership of businesses in sustainability and circular economy practices. He highlighted the fact that these awards validate the efforts of institutions in aligning with global sustainability standards, rigorously assessed by recognised institutions using precise methodologies.
In the Eco-mobility category, EVO clinched the Gold Award; Sultan Qaboos University, Mwasalat, Shell Oman Marketing and Premium Motors – Audi received the Silver Award; and Asyad Group and OQ took home the Bronze.
The ESG Category saw a range of awardees - from small businesses like Destination Sustainability, which received the Gold Award, and Oman Electricity Transmission Company and SLB winning Gold Awards in the large enterprises category. Sultan Qaboos University received a Silver Award in the Academia category.
Platinum Awards were presented to Asyad Group, Nama Group, Petroleum Development Oman, Sohar Aluminium and Veolia.
