2024 Science Fiesta to be held this weekend
Muscat - The 2024 edition of Science Fiesta, organised by Indian Science Forum (ISF), will be held on May 17 and 18 at the Al Hail campus of National University of Science and Technology. With a surge in interest and participation last year, the event promises to be a celebration of science, education and environmental consciousness.
Spearheaded by Dr J Retnakumar, Coordinator of ISF, Science Fiesta has witnessed a 45% increase in participation this year, with over 2,900 students registering from 20 schools. Organisers hope to expand participation to include international and Omani schools.
Addressing a press conference on Monday, Retnakumar said, “The event aims to promote science in society, particularly among youth and students.”
The theme of this year’s event - Environment - reflects a growing global concern for ecological preservation. Renowned environmental activist Dr Muralee Thummarukudy, Director of G20 Global Land Initiative Coordination Office of UN Convention to Combat Desertification, will deliver the keynote address. Rubaida al Busaidi, climate change expert and environmental advocate, who will serve as guest of honour.
Presentation of the APJ Abdul Kalam Award for Science and Technology to Thummarukudy in recognition of his exemplary contributions in the field environmental preservation will mark a highlight of the event.
The 2024 Science Fiesta schedule is packed with engaging activities. On Friday, several competitions and quizzes, including preliminary rounds and finals, will take place, alongside a photography contest. The following day will feature an exhibition titled ‘Our Environment, Our Future’, which will be followed by an interactive session in the afternoon providing attendees an opportunity to engage with experts. This will be followed by an awards ceremony.
