Arab League summit preparations in focus
MUSCAT — His Majesty Sultan Qaboos gave an audience at Bait al Baraka yesterday to Dr Nabil al Arabi, SecretaryGeneral of the Arab League.
His Majesty the Sultan and the Arab League chief discussed the march of joint Arab action in the backdrop of the current developments in the Arab arena. The meeting also touched on the ongoing preparations for the forthcoming Arab summit.
The audience was attended by Yusuf bin Alawi bin Abdallah, Minister Responsible for Foreign Affairs, Ahmed bin Helli, Deputy SecretaryGeneral of the Arab League, Wajih Hanafi, Assistant Secretary-general, Ali al Garoosh, Director of International Relations, and the delegation accompanying the guest.
Earlier, Alawi and Dr Nabil discussed a number of current Arab conditions in the light of the developments in the Arab region particularly the developments in Syria and the peace process in the Middle East.
The meeting also touched on aspects of developing the work at the Arab League.
Later, Dr Nabil and his delegation left here yesterday after a visit to the Sultanate during which he had the honour of having His Majesty the Sultan’s audience.
The secretary-general was seen off by Alawi and Ahmed bin Yusuf al Harthy, Foreign Ministry’s Under-secretary for Diplomatic Affairs.
The Arab League is involved in political, economic, cultural, and social programmes designed to promote the interests of member states. The Arab League has served as a forum for member states to co-ordinate their policy positions and deliberate on matters of common concern, settling some Arab issues and limiting conflicts.
The League has served as a platform for drafting and conclusion of almost all landmark documents promoting economic integration among member states, such as the formation of the Joint Arab Economic Action Charter, which set out the principles for economic activities of the League. It has played an important role in shaping school curricula, and preserving manuscripts and Arab cultural heritage.
The League has launched literacy campaigns and reproduced intellectual works and translated modern technical terminology for the use of member states.
