Sultanate wins appreciation certificate at WIP summit
HONOUR AT AMMAN: The award reflects the efforts exerted by the Sultanate in achieving gender egalitarianism at various levels
AMMAN: The Sultanate has won the Women in Parliaments Global Forum (WIP) appreciation certificate on Gender Equality in Basic and post-Basic Education.
The certificate was awarded by Silvana Koch Mehrin, Founder and Chairperson of the Women In Parliaments Global Forum (WIP) and Jordanian Senate President Faisal Akef al Fayez during the Sultanate’s participation in the summit.
The first of its kind to be held in a Middle East North African (MENA), the summit was co-organised by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and brought together 260 female parliamentarians from 98 countries.
Dr Suad bint Mohammed al Lawatiyah, Deputy Chairperson of the State Council, and head of the Sultanate’s delegation expressed the Sultanate’s appreciations for the award which she said reflects the efforts exerted by the Sultanate in achieving gender egalitarianism in various levels through applying the institution which ensures the women’s rights in health, education, scholarships, employment, wages and the obtainment of residential land.
Al Lawatiyah affirmed that the government of the Sultanate protects the social status of women and considers women as a main driver in society building which is why the government has designated om October 17 as the Omani Women’s Day thereby confirming the significant role played by women in the development process.
A study conducted by the Thomson Reuters Foundation world in 2014 on the conditions of women in the Arab has put the Sultanate on top of Arab countries in terms of protecting the rights of women and equalising them with their male counterparts, Al Lawatiyah said.
