In 2015, a number of new additions were made to the ROP’s ever expanding infrastructure. They include new police stations in Shinas, Jaalan Bani Bu Ali, Adam, Yanqul, Bahla, Thamrait, Al Khoudh, Liwa, Al Amerat and Salalah, as well as allied facilities in Sohar, Thamrait, Bahla and Rustaq.
This year, efforts are ongoing to deliver police stations and service facilities in a number of locations around the Sultanate. Already operational are stations in Al Mudhaibi, Salalah, Masirah, Liwa, Ibra and Qurayat.
ROP gives special attention to the training of its staff. The Sultan Qaboos Academy for Police Sciences is the main training centre that equips policemen with an array of professional and technical skills.
The ROP has also built a new Officers Institute in Al Wattayah to help absorb more trainees to fulfil the organisation’s personnel requirements.
Recognising its standing as one of the most technologically advanced government institutions in the Sultanate, the ROP has won numerous awards, both at the local or regional levels. It was conferred the prestigious EServices Award for Security and Safety in the and comprehensive peace in the Middle East within the context of international legitimacy as represented by the relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions, the principle of land for peace, the Arab peace initiative and the Road Map.
In this connection, the Sultanate supports the Palestinian people’s legitimate rights to recover their occupied lands and establish an independent state with Jerusalem as its capital, and the return of the Palestinian refugees to their homes.
The Sultanate also calls upon all states and supports all efforts to relieve the Palestinian people & sufferings as a result of Israel’s repressive practices and its illegal policies against the Palestinian people and the inviolability of their lands.
With its historical experience and its centuriesold seafaring and commercial traditions across the region and the world, it is only natural that Oman should seek to develop and reinforce relations with other states, while strengthening economic cooperation with the joint aims of promoting mutual interests with the outside world and furthering national development at home. Last year, the prowess of the ROP’s forensics department was in strongly in evidence when it successfully cracked a number of criminal cases, leading to a significant reduction in theft and robbery cases in particular. These successes pay testimony to the ROP’s continuing efforts to modernise its capabilities and serve the nation’s interests.
Despite population growth, growing expatriate numbers, and expanding and diversi- fying economic activities, crime rates have remained low in comparison with international trends.
Most of the crimes committed in the Sultanate are minor thefts stemming from inadequate vigilance, minor attacks, issuance of dud cheques and fraud.
Statistics for the third year in a row show a 48 per cent decline in the traffic related mortality rates and 14 per cent drop in injuries versus comparative figures for 2012. This comes as a result of the ROP’s efforts to reduce traffic accidents. Following the completion of a comprehensive study on traffic safety in the Sultanate, a number of best practice measures were introduced in boosting traffic safety in the short, medium and long-terms.
