Climate change mitigation discussed

MUSCAT: The National Climate Change Committee held its first meeting this year under the chairmansh­ip of Najeeb bin Ali bin al Rawas, UnderSecre­tary of the Ministry of Environmen­t and Climate Affairs.

Dr Malik bin Mohammed al Wardi, Director, Agricultur­al Research Station at the Centre for Environmen­tal Studies and Research (CESAR), presented a visual display about the scopes and standards of supports granted by the Green Climate Fund for the projects of climate change mitigation and adaptation.

Ibrahim bin Ahmed al Ajmi, Director-General of Climate Affairs, at the Ministry of Environmen­t and Climate Affairs, reviewed a report on ways of utilising the funds of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Kyoto Protocol.

Dr Yassin Abdulrahma­n al Sharabi, Director of CESAR, presented a visual display about the latest developmen­ts of the National Strategy for Adaptation and Climate Change Mitigation in the Sultanate and the second national communicat­ion project on climate change and its updated report for the next two years as required by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

It is worth noting that the National Climate Change Committee is tasked with presenting contributi­ons for the implementa­tion of national plans and policies for adaptation with the adverse effects of climate change.

The committee also proposes and implements national action plans for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. It determines the Sultanate’s attitudes on the issues put forward by the Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change United Nations Framework. — ONA
