Sharqiyah varsity hosts ‘University Day’ as part of second anniversar­y

IBRA: Al Sharqiyah University celebrated its second anniversar­y under the auspices of Shaikh Abdullah bin Mohammed al Salmy, Minister of Endowments and Religious Affairs.

An event titled University Day exhibited the students’ academic and technical projects. Many other cultural programmes took place to mark the day. Speaking about the academic environmen­t of the university, Dr Aboud al Sawafi, Vice-Chancellor, stated that the university provides 11 curriculum across faculties.

“The university takes pride in having a multi-national team of instructor­s belonging to 22 different nationalit­ies. It also has the strategy of nationalis­ation in place, and as many as 16 per cent of its academic and 74 per cent of its administra­tive staff are Omanis.”

According to Sam Wamuziri, Dean of the College of Engineerin­g, “the 2+2 or 2+3 programmes in Civil Engineerin­g enables the students to study diploma with having the chance to join Greenwich University, London, for their Bachelor’s degree. The university is working on establishi­ng a similar partnershi­p with the University of Manchester Metropolit­an in Electronic and Electrical Engineerin­g as well,” he added.

Students who achieved excellence in academic and extracurri­cular activities were rewarded and recognised at the function.

Distributi­ng the awards Prof Fouad Chedid, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs, highlighte­d the three main academic assessment parameters like IQ, talent and the ‘1000 hours’ rule. Practical intelligen­ce is more important than IQ, and hard work is more significan­t than talent, while it takes 1,000 hours of practice to become an expert in any field,” he noted.
