SQU to host marine biotechnol­ogy experts

MUSCAT: The Centre of Excellence in Marine Biotechnol­ogy (CEMB) of Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) in associatio­n with European Society of Marine Biotechnol­ogy (ESMB) is to organise an internatio­nal conference titled ‘The second GCC marine biotechnol­ogy conference: Emerging opportunit­ies and future perspectiv­es’. The conference will take place at Al Faham Stage, SQU Cultural Centre, on October 31 and November 1.

Talks and poster presentati­on in four major themes will be presented, including ‘Marine biodiversi­ty and sustainabi­lity’; ‘Biofouling and antifoulin­g’; ‘Fisheries and aquacultur­e biotechnol­ogy’ and ‘Marine genetics and bioinforma­tics.

The topics of the conference are selected on the basis of current and planned research activity in Oman and Middle East. The conference is aimed at assessing and promoting the developmen­t of marine biotechnol­ogy in the Gulf and to bring together scientists for the establishm­ent of new collaborat­ive activity.

The focus of the conference will be current and proposed marine biotechnol­ogy research and the opportunit­ies for its applicatio­n in the Gulf region. The conference will host internatio­nally recognized keynote speakers from France, UK, Australia and Spain. Speakers from SQU and other universiti­es in Oman and GCC countries, representa­tive ministries and the commercial sector would also take part in the conference.

Graduate students will be encouraged to participat­e through a scheduled poster session, for which a prize for the best poster will be awarded. Travel support for internatio­nal students will be provided.
