Oman Shipping Co to empower coastal women

Oman Shipping Company has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Omani Women’s Association Al Seeb to carry out “Sana’a” programme for the development of coastal women in the Sultanate. The programme includes training sessions for a number of members of the association in the field of producing fish pickles such as squid pickling where the courses are supervised by trained trainers in the field of food production.

In line with its sustainability approach, the programme seeks to empower coastal women economically by contributing to the establishment of SME’s in the production of fish pickles.

The MOU was signed by Tarik al Junaidi, CEO of the company and Wafaa al Amri, President of the Omani Women’s Association in Al Seeb. OSC will finance the construction of a workshop for fish pickles production at the premises of the association which will be equipped with processing and packaging of equipment. In addition to the possibility of making the plant available for rent and allocating the returns to finance the activities of the association.

Khalid al Mahruqi, Assistant Director of Corporate Affairs, said: “Sana’a as a community initiative designed by Oman Shipping Company and designated to upgrade coastal women in the Sultanate and provide them with the necessary skills and tools for the a maximum benefit of the abundant fish resources as well as enhancing the added value to this resources.

OSC is adopting several of social investment programmes that serve different social groups such as the Shera’a, Blue Economics Workshops, the Fishermen’s Safety Campaign as well as “Thaddi Oman” for Youth Development.
