MUSCAT: The Sultanate, represented by Oman Committee for University Sport (OCUS) has joined the world in marking the International Day of University Sport (IDUS), which falls on September 20 every year.

The celebration included fruitful speeches delivered by Leonz Eder, International University Sports Federation (FISU) Acting President and Dr Hamad Karam al Kaabi, Arab Universities Sports Federation (AUSF) Secretary General.

The celebration saw a panel discussion by Dr Salim bin Khamis al Araimi, Chairman of OCUS, where he highlighted the importance of university sport and its role in the educational process.

The celebration also included a review of the local, regional and international tournaments that the Committee is going to take part in.

“The university sport is a key element in the teaching process and a complementary tool to the educational institution’s role in sharpening concepts, values and scientific ideas through the actual practice of student activity according to his interests and talents,” the Chairman said Meanwhile, the OCUS seeks to consolidate this role and give it greater attention and support, believing in the importance of building and developing the student’s personality and practical skills.

Organised annually since 2016, the IDUS is celebrated on September 20 and was officially proclaimed by the United Nations Education, Science and Culture Organisation (Unesco).

This day aims at creating links between universities and their local communities focused around sport, physical activity and healthy living.
