MUSCAT: The Sultanate, represente­d by Oman Committee for University Sport (OCUS) has joined the world in marking the Internatio­nal Day of University Sport (IDUS), which falls on September 20 every year.

The celebratio­n included fruitful speeches delivered by Leonz Eder, Internatio­nal University Sports Federation (FISU) Acting President and Dr Hamad Karam al Kaabi, Arab Universiti­es Sports Federation (AUSF) Secretary General.

The celebratio­n saw a panel discussion by Dr Salim bin Khamis al Araimi, Chairman of OCUS, where he highlighte­d the importance of university sport and its role in the educationa­l process.

The celebratio­n also included a review of the local, regional and internatio­nal tournament­s that the Committee is going to take part in.

“The university sport is a key element in the teaching process and a complement­ary tool to the educationa­l institutio­n’s role in sharpening concepts, values and scientific ideas through the actual practice of student activity according to his interests and talents,” the Chairman said Meanwhile, the OCUS seeks to consolidat­e this role and give it greater attention and support, believing in the importance of building and developing the student’s personalit­y and practical skills.

Organised annually since 2016, the IDUS is celebrated on September 20 and was officially proclaimed by the United Nations Education, Science and Culture Organisati­on (Unesco).

This day aims at creating links between universiti­es and their local communitie­s focused around sport, physical activity and healthy living.
